IMMORTAL
IMMORTAL was Kalari Academy’s inaugural production, staged in September 2024. Taking inspirations from Hindu mythology, the play explored concepts such as righteousness and retribution while looking at the life of Parasuram and the consequences of his actions. Comprised mostly of first-time actors and crew, IMMORTAL was a resounding success with both shows being a sellout.

The Story
The story begins with the murder of Jamadagni at the hands of King Kartavirya Arjuna over the divine cow, Surabhi. Enraged, Jamadagni’s son Bhargava Rama seeks the Aadiguru, Lord Shiva to gain the knowledge and skills to avenge his father’s death. Lord Shiva grants his wish on 2 conditions - 1. Bhargava Rama will have to forgo his mortality, becoming a Chiranjeevi and 2. Bhargava Rama has to do the biding of Lord Shiva, whenever asked for it without question. Bhargava Rama accepts the conditions.
Lord Shiva imparts all his knowledge and skills of the arts form, Kalaripayattu to Bhargava Rama. At the culmination of his training, Lord Shiva presents the divine axe, Vidyudabi to Bhargava Rama whom from then, comes to be known as Parasuram. With the axe, Parasuram exacts his vengeance for his father’s death by annihilating 21 generations of kshatriyas, making the Earth free of kshatriyas each time.
As Parasuram finally retires to perform penance for his actions, Lord Shiva calls on him to fulfil his obligation. His task will be to train 2 warriors destined for greatness. Parasuram obliges to the command of Lord Shiva. The first warrior is Manikandan, son of Lord Shiva. Parasuram teaches him all he knows, and with the training Manikandan destroys the Asura Mahishi and is thereafter come to be called, Lord Ayyapan.
The second warrior is a kshatriya from the Kuru dynasty, Devaratta also known as Bheesmar. Parasuram trains Devaratta despite his discomfort in teaching a kshatriya. Devaratta’s training sets off a series of events which eventually leads to the great Kurukshetra war.
